چکیده
The major objective of this research was to evaluate the predictors of fatigue in patients with fibromyalgia (FM), using cross-sectional and daily assessment methodologies. In the cross-sectional phase of the research involving a sample of 105 FM patients, greater depression and lower sleep quality were concurrently associated with higher fatigue. While pain was correlated with fatigue, it did not independently contribute to fatigue in the regression equation. For a subset of patients from the cross-sectional sample ðn 1⁄4 63Þ who participated in a week of prospective daily assessment of their pain, sleep quality, and fatigue, multiple regression analysis of aggregated (averaged) daily scores revealed that previous day’s pain and sleep quality predicted next day’s fatigue. Depression from the cross-sectional phase was not related to aggregated daily fatigue scores. A path analytic framework was tested with disaggregated (removing between subjects variability) data in which pain was predicted to contribute to lower sleep quality which, in turn, was predicted to lead to greater fatigue. The results revealed that poor sleep quality fully accounted for the positive relationship between pain and fatigue, thus substantiating the mediational role of sleep quality. The findings are indicative of a dysfunctional, cyclical pattern of heightened pain and non-restful sleep underlying the experience of fatigue in FM. q 2002 International Association for the Study of Pain. Bounded Existentials and Minimal Typing
We study an extension of the second-order calculus of bounded quantiication, System F , with bounded existential types. Surprisingly, the most natural formulation of this extension lacks the important minimal typing property of F , which ensures that the set of types possessed by a typeable term can be characterized by a single least element. We consider alternative formulations and give an alg...

Our knowledge of the existence of endogenous descending pain modulatory systems spans at least three decades and we now know that brain stem descending pathways constitute a major mechanism in the control of pain transmission (for comprehensive reviews, see Fields and Basbaum, 1999; Millan, 2002). The basis for an endogenous descending pain modulatory circuit linking the periaqueductal gray (PA...

The present study examined the value of a measure of catastrophizing as a predictor of activity intolerance in response to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). A sample of 50 (17 men, 33 women) sedentary undergraduates participated in an exercise protocol designed to induce muscle soreness and were asked to return 2 days later to perform the same physical maneuvres. Participants performed five...

Data on 40 upper limb amputees (11 bilateral) with regard to stump pain, phantom sensation and phantom pain is presented. All the patients lost their limbs as a result of violent injuries intended to terrorise the population and were assessed 10–48 months after the injury. All amputees reported stump pain in the month prior to interview and ten of the 11 bilateral amputees had bilateral pain. P...
